The characteristics of the sign of Aries in Vedic astrology is a bit different than what you may have heard about Aries for most of your life. There is much that is the same as western astrology, but there are a few interesting differences.

The various characteristics of the signs are used for descriptions of people and things and for horary astrology and medical astrology. All of which is useful for predictions and a deeper understanding of your basic purpose.

This is true for western horary and medical astrology too, but again, the differences are interesting. If you are an Aries Sun person, or know someone who is, there are some ‘ah ha’s’ here for you.

The Gift of ARIES

ARIES Rules the Head

Aries, the head, is where we get our inspiration, the inspired thoughts and ideas we hope to accomplish. The rasi of Aries, therefore, is inspired and focused. The head is related to understanding and Aries has the pure pleasure of doing what is in its thoughts. Aries has the thoughts and inspirations and begins things. Aries is always reinventing itself.

Mars Rules ARIES

The lord of Aries is Mars. Aries is the masculine expression of Mars (Scorpio is the feminine). Mars, in the first 12 degrees, is in his Moolatrikona sign here (Aries is the source of Mars’ power). The Sun is exalted in Aries, and Saturn is in his debilitation in Aries.

ARIES is a ‘Cruel’ Male Sign

Masculine signs are cruel because they are interested in getting things done more than being and enjoying. Therefore, they are harder and pushier. Aries is happy and satisfied when they put their ideas into action. If Aries is not able to put inspiration into action often enough, you get a very frustrated Aries!

The niceties of life are something that Aries can completely ignore when they are actively pursuing a goal. Including being diplomatic and taking time to rest and relax with their loved ones. This is where their headstrong reputation comes from.

ARIES is of the Fire Element

The fire element is characterized by will and is intuitively centered. Intuition is the ability to understand something immediately without the need for conscious reasoning. Intuition bridges the gap between the conscious and unconscious mind, between instinct and reason. This intuition activates the will and the resulting action that follows.

Aries intuits concepts and ideas. Aries is logical because it’s ruled by Mars, the planet of logic, but his logic is so fast, he may not be able to explain how he came to know what he intuits. Aries loves to do everything quickly. I’m an Aries Sun, Venus, and Mercury person. When growing up, my friends called me ‘roadrunner’ because I walked so fast everywhere I went.

In horary astrology, if one is looking for a lost object, the fire element indicates that it is at a middle height. Up off the ground, but not high up off the ground like an air sign would be.

The Caste of ARIES is Kshatriya (Warrior)

Caste is temperament (not social hierarchy), and Brihat Parashara considers ARIES to be of the Kshatriya caste. Aries is the Rajas sign that seeks adventure in leading and protecting others.

The castes are related to the twelve houses of the horoscope. Houses 1, 5, and 9 are the Dharma (philosophical duty) houses, and correlate to the goal of Kshatriyas and the fire signs.

ARIES is Night-Strong and Back-Rising

Some Rasis (signs) are strong and vigorous during the day, and some are so at night. Aries is a night-strong sign. Night-strong signs are those that get energized by internal experiences (such as thought, emotion, and contemplation). The night-strong and back-rising signs are mentally and physically enlivened at night. Like the other fire signs, Aries is full of thoughts, ideas, and dreams.

The sign of Aries being a night-strong and back-rising sign is somewhat clumsy in bringing their ideas into concrete reality. Because Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, it lacks maturity and therefore has a hard time being realistic about what it takes to make their ideas work. Uh, this is SO true. I’m in my 60’s now and am just barely starting to know how long it will take to do something and whatever it is, it’s still takes too long for me. 🙂

Aries operates best as the idea person, the person in the “think-tank” because of it’s moveable, nature. Successful Aries have other planets in signs with “know-how” (Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, and Aquarius, and Pisces), or they are partnered to people with these abilities.

When my daughter was small, I started a mom’s group in my city. But once it was started and on it’s way, I handed it over to others to run and I didn’t stay because I realized it wasn’t what I was actually looking for. As far as I know, it’s still going today. I’m often full of ideas and give them out regularly to people but don’t look back to see what happens with them. It’s not possible to realize every idea, every inspiration, that comes into our heads.

ARIES is Four-Footed

The four-footed signs are strong, powerful, and capable of carrying enormous burdens (the phrase “beast of burden” probably came from this) and performing great tasks. Aries is a four-footed sign, and along with the other animal signs (Taurus, Leo, 2nd half of Sagittarius and 1st half of Capricorn) are interested in the 10th house matters of work and command.

Emotion and psychology, matters related to the 4th house, are of little interest to the four-footed signs. Unless an Aries Sun person has the Sun in the 4th, in that case, he will be interested in overcoming family patterns and personal shortcomings.

The Color of ARIES is Red

The ‘color’ of Aries is Red.
