the moon and the moon-mind way of beingThe Moon rules the sign of Cancer, and especially when in the Cancer season, it’s the perfect time to talk about what it means to “be here now.” This phrase — made famous by Ram Dass — beautifully captures what I think of as the Moon-mind way of being.

The wisdom of “being here now” isn’t new. People have been saying it since time began. But it’s also a profound expression of the Moon’s function in astrology — to feel, sense, and imagine.

The Moon represents the sense-mind, the part of us that experiences the world through our five senses. But it’s also the imaginative mind — the one conducting vivid, often emotional, conversations entirely in your head.

🌀 What You Imagine Changes Everything

If you’ve ever mentally replayed an upsetting conversation — or made up a whole new one — you’ve probably noticed how your mood shifts.

I’ve noticed that my imagination can change my emotional state completely:

  • If I’m having angry mental conversations, I feel tense, irritable, drained.

  • If I imagine something beautiful, kind, or meaningful, my energy expands.

This is the Moon at work — it governs not just memory, but mood and emotional tone. We can use it consciously, or be dragged around by it unconsciously.

⏳ When You’re Living in the Future or Past

Fear often arises when we mentally jump into the future. If I pause and ask, “What exactly am I afraid of right now?” I usually realize I’ve been time traveling in my mind.

“I’m an old man and have known a great many troubles, most of which never happened.” – Mark Twain

Likewise, when I feel sad or wistful, I’m often longing for the past — a moment that felt safer, sweeter, or more alive.

The Moon thrives in the present moment. When we’re mentally somewhere else, we’re not using our Moon energy in a healthy way.

🍊 The Orange Mindfulness Exercise

A popular mindfulness practice is to eat an orange… slowly. For half an hour.

Hands peeling an orange mindfulness exercise for the Moon-Mind way of livingIt sounds simple, but it’s a profound way to awaken your Moon-mind:

  • Smell the burst of citrus oil from the peel

  • Hear the soft tearing of each segment

  • Taste the sweetness of the juice

  • Feel the sticky drying juice on your fingers

  • See the brilliant orange hue of the discarded peelings

  • Gnaw the white pith if you’re like me and enjoy the bitter bits too

This practice brings you fully into your body — and into the Moon’s favorite place: right now.

🧘‍♂️ The Teachers of Presence: Ram Dass & Eckhart Tolle

If you’ve been walking a spiritual path for a while, you’ve likely come across Ram Dass and Eckhart Tolle. Both of them have built their life’s work around presence — the only place life actually happens.

Fun astrology note: Eckhart Tolle has Moon conjunct Rahu in his natal chart. That combination can be intense, but in his case, it propelled him into a role where he teaches others how to become fully present. A great example of how so-called “challenging” placements can lead to spiritual awakening.

🌗 When the Moon Is Happy

You’ve had those moments:

  • Time feels like it slows down

  • You’re fully immersed in what you’re doing

  • You’re not watching yourself — you’re just being

That’s the Moon, functioning beautifully. These are the moments we crave because they remind us who we are when we’re not spinning stories about the past or future.
