Your soul planet, the Atmakaraka, in the Navamsa, is called the Svamsa.* If your Svamsa is in Virgo, then your spiritual challenge this lifetime is to learn to digest and assimilate the many difficult experiences of life and reduce distractions to focus on developing your talents and skills. Virgo Svamsa’s challenge is to avoid getting bogged down in many details and thereby miss the larger truth.

The first two things I look at when I start working on a new chart is the Atmakaraka (AK)  planet and sign in the main birth chart and the Svamsa sign in the Navamsa. The AK planet and then the sign of the Svamsa provides the context for the rest of the chart. The sign of the Svamsa is critical for seeing a person’s purpose, spiritual challenge, or task, and who they are.

According to the Jaimini sutras, “In Virgo svamsa, there is fear from ‘itches and stoutness, density, and fire, the digestive fire.”

Itches and stoutness of the Svamsa in Virgo are symbolic of the many unfulfilled desires and the over-focus on details. Related to this is the distractions that keep the native from cultivating and realizing their talents and abilities.

This causes a type of mental itch. If these itches are not processed and distractions are not reduced, it can actually cause weight gain (stoutness)!

Virgo rules purification of the lower bowel, the part of us that purifies our food (digestive fire), extracting what is good and eliminating what isn’t. If you don’t have an effective way to process and “digest” life’s difficult experiences, then this can actually cause digestion problems. The reference to digestive fire in the above sutra can be actual heartburn and other digestive problems.

How the Virgo Svamsa Affects Love Relationships

Virgo, represented by the prepubescent girl (the virgin), usually indicates frustrations in your romantic and sexual life. Basically, this means that you need to set up your life to develop your skills, talents, and abilities first. If your AK is in Virgo’s sign in the D9, this basically means that this life-time is more about self-development than it is about relationships.

In fact, being committed to self-development and developing your skills and talents is actually a type of entrance fee to a good relationship.

If you put your partner at the center of your life, you’ll gradually give up all of your personal projects, hobbies, and your creative work in the world.

This can get you into relationships where you are in a “one-down” position, even to the point of servitude.

People with skills and talents that they are passionately committed to are exciting to potential mates. However, as soon as you find yourself neglecting your interests, exercise routine, meditation practice, etc., to serve your partner more than is normal — it’s the beginning of the end of the relationship.

Many Virgo in Svamsa People Prefer to Be Single

When the Svamsa is in Virgo, you’ll frequently find that the relationship’s needs interfere with your path. You can stay in the relationship, of course, but you’ll need to be “selfish” to keep growing. If your partner is not 100% supportive of your work, whatever it may be, then you can be sure there will be problems sooner or later.

Many Virgo Svamsa people decide that being single, or at least, not being married, is much easier for them.

Another way Virgo Svamsa can manifest in your life is you may be a renunciate or ascetic, a person devoted to the divine and spiritual development. Even within marriage. It’s best, of course, when both partners agree to this. If only one person is committed to celibacy then the other person is frustrated and miserable.

I’ve seen several Virgo Svamsa clients who have been in this type of frustrating situation where their partner wanted to be celibate, but they didn’t. Yet find it hard to leave the relationship or marriage because of everything else good, such as the friendship between them and their partner. (Mercury rules Virgo and Mercury rules friendship).

How to “Digest” and Purify Your Daily Life

One of the remedies that I recommend to clients who have their Svamsa in Virgo’s sign, as a way to process and digest the many difficult experiences in life, is stream-of-consciousness writing. This writing practice is done daily, for about 15 to 30 minutes at a time.

Image depicting “stream-of-consciousness writing”

Stream-of-consciousness writing is writing where you don’t worry about spelling, punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, and, more importantly, making sense.

Once you put pen to paper, you start writing, and you don’t stop until you have either filled three pages front and back or written for 15 to 30 minutes.

If your mind should happen to go blank while you are writing, write, “my mind is blank. I can’t think of anything to write.” You can either keep repeating that phrase until something comes into your mind, or you can write about the chair you’re sitting on, the desk you’re sitting at, the pen you’re using to write with. Long before you’re finished doing any of this, more thoughts will pop into your mind.

This simple spiritual practice not only helps you to process and digest difficult experiences, but it will soothe your nervous system, reduce the noise in your mind, and help you to access your intuition. Being able to hear and trust, your intuition, will help you make better choices in every area of your life. Especially in relationships, if your Svamsa happens to be in Virgo, especially Venus in Virgo.

Virgo Navamsa & The Work of Byron Katie

“Loving What Is” by Byron Katie

Book by Byron Katie

Another recommendation is the work of Byron Katie, a spiritual teacher who is very logical, compassionate, and funny. Her work, which is a simple four-question self-inquiry process, can help you untangle the winding roads of your mind.

When you’re feeling confused and unsure of what’s going on in a situation, her simple process will help you get clarity, often in just moments.

Here is a playlist on her YouTube Channel for relationships.

Katie has a great sense of humor, and you will see how anyone who works with her ends up in a much better place than where they started. A session with her typically begins with tears or anger and ends with laughter and peace.

Career Indications of Virgo Svamsa

The possible career indications for the Virgo AK in the Navamsa are the healing arts, the medical and other healing fields, business, the law, or the arts. The career also depends on other planets influencing the AK in the main natal chart and the Navamsa, but I have seen those who have the AK in Virgo are usually in one of these careers.

Virgo Svamsa Can Be Easier with Benefic Aspects

If there are benefic influences on the Svamsa in Virgo, you will be able to overcome the sexual frustrations in love and become adept at managing and cultivating loving and respectful relationships.

If there are not benefic influences on your Virgo Svamsa, don’t despair, the transits of Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, and the waxing Moon will be regularly and cyclically influencing your Svamsa throughout your life and bringing opportunities for love and positive growth.

*You can find your Atmakaraka, “essence” planet in the natal chart, by identifying the planet at the highest degree in whatever sign it’s in. Don’t count Neptune, Pluto, Uranus, or the North and South Nodes of the Moon. Then go to the Navamsa (the D9 or the 9th divisional Varga chart) and look for your Atmakaraka planet there and take note of the sign it’s in. I will be writing about each sign of the Svamsa in the coming weeks.

If you don’t have a copy of your birth chart, you can get it for free, including ALL of the Varga charts typically used (divisional charts mathematically derived from the birth chart. The Navamsa (D9) chart being where you can find the sign your Atmakaraka, called the Svamsa simply because it’s in the D9 chart.
