Sagittarius Sign – A Man on a Horse

The sign of Sagittarius is a man on a horse in Vedic Astrology. It’s not a Centaur like it is in western astrology. I don’t know why it’s different, probably something to do with India’s mythologies versus the West’s mythologies.

One of the categories below is how many “feet” a sign has, and Sagittarius is two-footed in front and four-footed in back. The signs’ footed aspects have specific meanings, as you’ll see  below.

Sagittarius Symbol is a Man on a Horse

As I mentioned above, the symbol for Sagittarius is a man on a horse in Vedic Astrology. Here is the description from Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra:

Dhanus “bow” Rasi (sign)

“Back rising is the Bow owned by Jupiter, Sattvik, golden, vigorous at night, fiery, a Kshatriya, two-footed at the beginning, four-footed at the end, regular limbed, bearing a bow, standing in the east, moving on the ground and made splendid by Brahma.”

Sagittarius is a Dual Sign

Dual rasis are a blend of moveable and fixed traits. They change, but not radically. They remain as they are while allowing for adjustments and improvements. Dual Rasis are multi-skilled and prompt learning and improvement within the framework of the status quo. Sagittarius improves upon the fears and vulnerabilities of Scorpio, the sign before.

Sagittarius Rules the Buttocks

The buttocks are the largest muscles in the human body and are most responsible for the body’s movement. Scientists believe that man’s physical advantage over other “land animals” is this large muscle that allows man to travel longer distances than other creatures.

Any animal can beat a human in short distances, but in long marathon distances, a healthy and fit man can outrun any animal and cross more miles in a single day than any other land species. Since the buttocks’ muscles are most responsible for moving our bodies, they are responsible for our direction and purpose.

Man’s purposes are long-term and defined compared to the purpose of an animal whose purpose is immediate and instinctive. Thus man has better-developed buttocks and can continue a course for a much longer time than an animal.

Sagittarius also rules the tailbone, which in man consists of four fused small vertebrae. The purpose of a tail is to maintain balance while moving. In man, the tailbone is short and does not affect physical balance, but it does symbolize the idea of balance, the idea that one’s purpose must be in balance with a greater purpose. Sagittarius, therefore, represents one’s philosophy and beliefs, which serve to keep one in check.

Sagittarius is a ‘Cruel’ Masculine Sign

Cruel signs want to get things done and are, therefore, focused and pushier. Sagittarius is so involved in the goal that it seeks that it becomes oblivious to all other things.

Sagittarius is of the Fire Element

The three Fire signs, Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius, are Pitta since Pitta largely comes from Fire. Pitta provides Sagittarius the energy with which to seek and pursue.

The Guna of Sagittarius

Cancer, Leo, Sagittarius, and Pisces are the Sattva Rasis. Sattva grants Sagittarius the motivation to search for truth and to dispense knowledge.

The Caste of Sagittarius is Warrior (Kshatriya)

Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius are the Kshatriya Rasis. Leo and Sagittarius are Sattva signs that desire to protect and lead on account of their noble ideals. The signs are related to the twelve houses of the horoscope. The 1st, 5th, and 9th houses are the Dharma (philosophical duty) houses, which correlate to Kshatriyas’ goals.

Sagittarius is Night Strong & Back Rising

Some songs are strong and vigorous during the day, and some are so at night. Sagittarius is a night strong sign. Night strong Rasis gets energized by internal experiences (such as thought, emotion, and contemplation).

Rasis are considered to rise over the Eastern horizon with either their fronts first or their backs first. Sagittarius is back rising. Signs that rise back first are clumsy in bringing things to concrete realization and take more time. Back rising signs are full of ideas but somewhat clumsy in bringing their ideas to realization.

Sagittarius has many goals but does not always have the realism to bring the goals into realization. Because it’s a fire sign, Sagittarius can allow idealism to come between it and the goal.

Sagittarius is Two-Footed AND Four-Footed

Rasis are either two-footed, four-footed, many footed or without feet, and moving in the water. Sagittarius is interesting because it is both a two-footed human and a four-footed animal.

The human two-footed Rasis are adaptable but not particularly strong; their strength is their ability to adapt.

The two-footed Rasis are particularly interested in the first house matters of thinking and following one’s true nature and path. They are least interested in the 7th house matters of maintaining partnerships.

Four-footed Rasis are strong, powerful, and capable of carrying great burdens and carrying out great tasks. The second half of Sagittarius is four-footed. The four-footed Rasis are particularly interested in the 10th house matters of work and command and least interested in the 4th house matters of emotion and psychology.

Jupiter is the Lord of Sagittarius

Jupiter is the lord of Sagittarius and Pisces. The signs that are ruled by the same planet are synergistic; what influences one will influence the other. Each planet rules one of the positive, masculine signs and one negative, feminine Rasi. The positive energized sign of Sagittarius will exhibit Jupiter’s energy in a masculine, initiative manner.

There are no planets exalted or debilitated in the sign of Sagittarius. Still, Mercury is uncomfortable here because Mercury is an enemy to Jupiter (Jupiter is not an enemy to anyone).

The Color of Sagittarius

The color of the sign of Sagittarius is orange. If you want to emphasize Sagittarius in your chart, wear clothing, jewelry, paint walls, and have furniture shades of orange colors. Neeshe and I talk more in detail about the color of Sagittarius and gemstone prescriptions.
