Sagittarius Svamsa
What is the meaning of Sagittarius Svamsa (the Atmakaraka in the Navamsa)? It means you often try to live according to ideals and, in doing so, you take on more than you can realistically handle.
This leads to a fall from grace —or, sometimes, a literal fall.
To understand how this shows up from multiple angles, it helps to look at both personal examples and well-known charts.
If you have Saturn or Mars in Sagittarius as personal planets in the birth chart, the same thing can happen (‘personal’ points and planets are the ascendant, ascendant ruler, the Sun, Moon, or Atmakaraka).
My ascendant ruler is Saturn in Sagittarius in the 12th house. The ascendant and the ascendant ruler represent the body.
This brings me to one of my own very Sagittarian stories.
Personal Experiences With Sagittarius
An Embarrassing Sagittarius Story
Once when Mars was transiting through the sign of Sagittarius and joining my natal ascendant ruler Saturn, I fell hard on the sidewalk (in front of a group of people, naturally).
I was doing the Sagittarius thing of walking while looking up, living in the future instead of paying attention to where I was in the moment. There was a higher lip on one of the cracks in the sidewalk, and I tripped.
That’s not the only time I fell on the sidewalk. Having my natal Saturn in Sag is a permanent situation, and Mars in Sag transits can trigger a fall (Mars is transiting in Sagittarius right now).
And of course, there were more memorable episodes.
Another Sagittarius Fall
Another time, I was walking with some friends after Thanksgiving dinner —of course, ahead of everyone —when I turned to say something to someone and tripped and fell.
I tried to break my fall with my arms, and that was a huge mistake. My arms hurt so much and stiffened up so badly that I couldn’t move them.
My new nickname after that was Rexie, short for Tyrannosaurus Rex, because my arms were stuck up in a way very reminiscent of the dinosaur (what did they use those tiny arms for, anyway?).
Naturally, the situation led to a more extended recovery period.
I had to sleep upright in the easy chair because lying down was impossible. My arms stayed like that for several days, and prednisone was the only thing that made them usable again.
The only good thing about that experience was that I got to binge-watch ReGenesis (a great science fiction TV series about the NORBAC collaboration between Canada, Mexico and the United States, a laboratory for countering bio-terrorism).
This tendency shows up symbolically as well, not just physically.
The Vedic Meaning of Sagittarius Svamsa
In Vedic astrology, Sagittarius is a man on a horse, not a centaur, like it is in Western astrology. A man on a horse can fall off (I fell off a horse once, too!)
Then there is a symbolic fall from grace when your Svamsa or other personal planets (ascendant, ascendant lord, Sun, Moon, or Atmakaraka) are in the sign of Sagittarius.
Famous Examples of Sagittarius Svamsa
Donald Trump’s Sagittarius Svamsa
A good example of this is Donald Trump, now President of the U.S. He has the Sagittarius Svamsa. His Moon, a personal planet, is also in Sagittarius in his natal chart.
His chart demonstrates ‘falling from grace’ in unmistakable ways.
He filed for corporate bankruptcy six times with his hotel and casino businesses. He took on more than he could handle, and he misjudged the market. These bankruptcies didn’t affect his personal finances; he was able to keep the businesses open for a while, but his reputation was damaged.
And this pattern continues into his political life.
Now in his second term as president, he is ‘overreaching’ and doing illegal and unconstitutional things as fast and as furiously as possible. He finds loopholes in the law to get away with things no other president has, upsetting a significant number of people in the process.
Not to mention the Epstein files scandal. His ratings are lower than those of any other president in American history. He is falling from grace again.
Winston Churchill: A Classic Sagittarius Svamsa Case
Finally, if you are not yet convinced, Winston Churchill is a compelling case study of the effects of the Sagittarius Svamsa. Check out this info I got from Google AI (edited), it’s incredible.
His life strikingly reflects both literal and symbolic falls.
Physical Falls
- 1962: At age 87, Churchill fell in Monte Carlo, breaking his left hip. He was flown back to London for surgery and extensive recovery.
- 1960: He fell and broke a small bone in his back.
- 1893: As a young man, he fell from a bridge into a tree, rupturing a kidney and suffering a serious but ultimately survivable injury. (He leaped from the bridge on purpose, aiming for the tree. A clear case of taking on more than he could realistically handle!)
Just as dramatic were the symbolic parallels.
Fall From Grace
- 1915: Following the failed Gallipoli campaign (a battle that England lost because of the rugged terrain), Churchill resigned from the cabinet. This event is widely considered his “fall from grace,” as his career seemed to be over at the time.
- 1916: He volunteered to serve in the trenches on the Western Front, a period of exile that some argue was a turning point, ultimately leading to a resurgence of his career.
Churchill’s Sagittarian Leadership Traits
Winston Churchill is regarded by many historians as the greatest statesman and effective leader of the 20th century.
He was as successful as he was because of another Sagittarian trait: the ability to inspire people with his passion (a fire characteristic). His enthusiasm, determination, and optimism (Jupiter) were persistent.
He didn’t allow a defeatist attitude, and he wouldn’t even discuss reasonable terms with Adolf Hitler; he knew a man like Hitler was not reasonable.
And, as with many Sagittarian Svamsa natives, his chart reveals the inner motivation behind all of this.
What to Do If You Have Sagittarius Svamsa
(or the Sun, Moon, AK, Ascendant, or Ascendant Lord in Sagittarius)
Practical Grounding for Sagittarius Svamsa
When walking, watch where you’re going, glance down frequently, and don’t walk backwards in the dark (I’m talking to myself here).
Beyond physical awareness, emotional and psychological self-care are equally important.
Managing Ideals and Expectations
Forgive yourself daily for not living up to your ideals. Ideals are just that, ideals. They are not quite realistic because we humans can’t be perfect, no matter how hard we try.
Ideals are for aiming towards (like Sagittarius’ arrow) and for inspiration, but are ultimately not completely attainable.
Unrealistic expectations of yourself can create fanaticism, and an overwhelming urge to force others to adopt your ideals.
In addition to self-forgiveness, managing your expectations is essential.
Avoiding Overwhelm with Sagittarius Svamsa
Avoid overwhelm. The lovely optimism and faith of Sagittarius can lead you to believe that you can handle more than you really can. This is the classic reason that people with this Svamsa ‘fall from grace.’
Invitation to Sagittarius Svamsa Readers
These are all the tips at this time. If you have your Svamsa in Sagittarius, you may have had some physical or symbolic falls, and you may have a few tips of your own. If so, please let me know!
Wear a Turquoise Gemstone or Wear the Color
The gemstone turquoise protects against physical falls. I don’t know if it helps with falls from grace, but it couldn’t hurt.
The important thing to know is that it has to be real turquoise (not dyed jade) and it must touch the skin.
A turquoise nugget on a chain or leather string and worn under your clothes would be ideal if you don’t want it to show. Turquoise beads in a necklace or bracelet works too. Ebay is an excellent source for gemstones.
If you can’t get the gemstone turquoise for some reason, you can wear the color turquoise in your clothes. Everyone can find a shade of turquoise, warm tone slightly green, or cool toned slightly more blue.
